NSC: Bombs not for sabotage

The bombs that exploded around Sukhumvit soi 71 in Bangkok yesterday were most likely intended for use in attacking individuals, not for terrorism or sabotage, and were not powerful enough to cause large-scale destruction, National Security Council secretary-general Wichean Photephosree said on Wednesday.

The NSC chief was speaking at a press conference at Government House after a meeting of representatives of security agencies, the armed forces, senior police and and Foreign Ministry representatives.

He said the materials used in making the bombs did not point to a large scale attack.

Materials for bomb making is so readily available locally or easily passed the security posts at the entry point ! This is very serious threat to public and national security, will those concerned please pull up your socks and be more vigilant and stringent, for all sake !!!

Factually, the Defense Minister is correct. He said the bomb blasts weren't an act of terrorism. That's true, they were a work related accident. What I don't understand is India's decision to continue purchasing Iranian crude oil in opposition to the US/EU embargo, even now after the Iranian's have used Indian soil in a revenge attack against Israel.

Whatever Secretary-general Wichean Photephosree is saying, I agree fully with Discussion 1.
The Secretary General should resign with immediate effect, as yet again our "protectors" had absolutely no clue of the existence of these "Terrorists", yes terrorists, trying to kill at random.
How can Wichean stutter some absolute nonsense as in his press release?
Also the Thai Foreign Minister Surapong, likewise, wants to ssure us of the capabilities of the security forces here in Thailand. How does he intend to do this, as the past couple of weeks have spoken for their incapabilities and lack of informationa and prevention.

The attack was planned for the entertainment complex, lucky for us it failed.

Our government said "it was a small matter"!! A small matter - when 1 bomb blew up the safe house; a 2nd bomb blew up a taxi-cab; and the 3rd blew up the terrorist's legs. What about the safety of the residents in the soi and on the main street? By what quality measure do they, those who are entrusted to "serve and protect", use to distinguish the severity of a terrorist act or event??

Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said also insisted the bomb explosions in Soi Sukhumvit 71 were not an act of terrorism.

act of terrorism - the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear.

Pol Lt-Gen Wiboon Bangthamai, the Immigration Police chief, said initial reports showed the three suspects travelled from Soeul, in South Korea, to Phuket and then travelled to Bangkok on Feb 8.

Earlier reports said they came from Malaysia?????? Which is correct?

Killing an individual can also be terrorism - especially someone at the Government level

  • Discussion 5 : 15/02/2012 at 12:55 PM5

If the police can't rule out that the bombs were being constructed to possibly kill Israeli diplomats, then how can they rule out terrorism as the intent of the suspects? Terrorism doesn't always involve a massive amount of deaths. This is a bunch of double talk from the police and government.

  • Discussion 4 : 15/02/2012 at 12:23 PM4

Why are bombs being examined to see if same as India, after this "expert" claims he knows their construction? If authorities haven't interviewed Thai lady , how do they know she wasn't involved? The administration seems to be going way beyond reason to give the false impression the terrorism doesn't endanger Thais. Last month's declaration that there was no future danger of terrorism was obviously mistaken. Even if the target is the lowly farang, collateral damage is pretty common with bombs. Of course, if the bombers never hurt a Thai and kill enough farang, the tourist industry will dry up pretty quickly.Anyone book a tour to Lebanon lately? Ghaza? This isn't over.
