B4.9bn for urgent water projects

The government has approved 117 urgent water management projects for provinces in upstream, middle stream and downstream areas with a combined value of 4.99 billion baht, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Friday.

The cabinet will on Tuesday next be asked to approve the special budget for these urgent projects.

I will be negative to Thailand alone. Corruption exists everywhere, it's the deficiency of any system. Of course, for some countries, the degrees of corruption vary. Let's say that for this particular number 117 projects/ 5 billion baht. There will be a 40 percent "corruption fee." That is, 40 percent of 5 billion is stolen or taken from the bank illegally, which means 2 billion will be lost and 3 billion will be applied righfully. Do you think we can reduce this percentage to say, 20 percent? We will save a lot.

She thanked all state offices, ministries, provincial governors and the Bangkok governor for giving the government full cooperation, and especially those people who sacrificed their land for use as monkey cheek catchment areas. So maybe the people who live to the East, North & West of Bangkok can expect same as last year! Except for Industrial Estates to North of Bangkok which may have walls 1 metre thick & 4 metres high. No water can get in, neither can workers. No raw materials in so none out. Good plan.

As mentioned elsewhere in the news, I wonder if any of these projects require environmental impact studies. If so, are they being incorporated into the 3 month time frame? Englishbob also rightly points out by implying about the quality of workmanship? What quality controls will be put into place?

Regardless of our differences, I would think it civil to allow the government to attempt to do good before condemning their efforts. Obviously there will be plenty of time to do so if/when they fail.

Well if everything is going to be finished in 90 days, I'm sure workmanship will be perfect.
Unless it's another Shinawatra deadline like eradicating poverty, traffic, drugs etc in 6 months.
Let me just check if any of those have been eradicated..... errrmm..... No!

Thus far all I've seen it how to protect business and industrial estates. There is not a word of how they intend to protect their very own citizens. Building high floodwalls and dykes to protect industrial estates will only cause a greater amount of water to flood into people's homes. Estates are protected, but how will people get to work when they're once again over their heads in water. What a great way to say thanks to those who voted you in. Not well thought out at all.
