I am writing to both clarify errors in the Bangkok Post's Sunday Spectrum article, ''Myanmar reforms 'mask meteoric rise in drug trade''' by Phil Thornton and appeal for a problem-solving approach to the challenge of poppy cultivation in Myanmar.
The article claims that a major factor in the growth of opium cultivation has been ceasefire deals struck between the government of Myanmar and armed ethnic groups. This is untrue.
From 1996 to 2006, poppy cultivation in Myanmar decreased by 86%. Areas under ceasefire accounted for a significant part of this reduction.

Naively brought 360 ecstasy tablets into Thailand? LOL! That's not naive...that's intend to sell.Naive would have been a few tablets for his own consumption.I doubt he wanted to consume 360 tablets during his stay here. I wonder how long a sentence he would have got in his home-country,Turkey,and how privileged he would have been there...books,work,education,food and all ? Not much different than Thailand except that the guards in Turkey might be raping and beating him on a regular basis.I guess he's lucky for being jailed here rather than there. Try not to make victims of drug traffickers. It's pathetic and they know the risks.

Chris Kaye. Don't forget that in most cases the people quoted didn't actually say the things quoted, they are what the newspaper's Thai/English translator reckons they said.

I believe prisoners should be performing services to the community like cleaning out drains ,picking up garbage ,and maybe on farms .These workers would be useful to the community and would feel better about themselves because they have some use .

@Jack Ayan,-Poreigners doing too much time- Thais are also sentenced to ridiculous long prison time. The problem in Thailand is that the Thai population think that these long sentences do fit the crime.
