Businesses in Nakhon Phanom are urging the government to support and build facilities to link the province to the Greater Mekong Subregion to maximise the benefit of a new bridge linking Thailand and Laos.
The 1.8-billion-baht bridge from Nakhon Phanom to Tha Kheak in Laos has seen little use since it was completed four months ago. Logistics costs are higher when using the bridge compared to the Thai-Lao bridge in Mukdahan, said Mongkhol Tansuwan, chairman of Nakhon Phanom's Chamber of Commerce.
That's because the new bridge was not included in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) agreement, which ushered in lower fees for transport companies in the border towns of GMS member countries.
