Vicious attack severs ex-soldier's hopes

A former private, who once held a bright future in the military, can now barely support himself after being injured in the southern unrest

If it were not for the bomb blast that hit him four years ago, Mangkornthong Limprasertkul might have joined the Army Non-commissioned Officer School and become a young corporal.

Mangkornthong Limprasertkul, 23, a former army private who was left with poor memory and limited movement after a bomb attack in Krong Pinang district of Yala four years ago, sells lottery tickets at Phramongkutklao Hospital. APICHART JINAKUL

Today the 23 year old Chiang Rai native is just an ex-army private who sells lottery tickets at Phramongkutklao Hospital in Bangkok. He has poor memory, speaks slowly and his right side is too weak to function due to injuries from the blast in Krong Pinang district of Yala on May 28, 2008, that injured him and five other soldiers who were escorting local teachers.

Khun Landofyim #5, you sure speak the truth. The problem is way too many people in Thailand are too blind to see it.

Are there government programs to assist these young warriors? The country owes them some help as they struggle to deal with injuries they received in service to the country.

It is because Thailand is no longer land of smiles, it is the land of everyoe for themself. But they can give 7.5 million to each person hurt in a protest to destroy Bangkok. This country os headed the same way as when Thaksin was running it. A bankrupt society that spends money to buy votes for the next election. Get rid of the stupid tablet idea and help the soldiers and police who get hurt.

I am shocked! Is there no disability pension for injured soldiers?

Here's a man who'd paid a price to serve & protect the land that he love, and still paying.
It's good to know that the country takes such good care of those who'd volunteered to protect it.

What is government compensation for disabled soldiers? People in service to their country deserve the highest respect and support from fellow citizens and government agencies.
