Pollution in Mae Sai reaches critical levels

Haze pollution in the North yesterday hit the highest levels in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai, since January, the Department of Pollution Control says.

Somchai: Confident things will improve

The level of 323.4 microgrammes per cubic metre was recorded yesterday, after two consecutive days of the district developing critical haze pollution of more than 300ug/cu/m. On Thursday, it was nearly 306ug/cu/m.

The burning here in the north starts after the rain season ends.
Since then every evening, morning and in the daytime there is smoke in the air.

I think the only workable solution is to organize this "burning festival," with a few farmers at a time doing it, so that the level of smoke is acceptable. Thailand is still a third-world country full of poorly educated people, and until that changes, this kind of problem will continue to persist.

Surfer hasn't been anywhere obviously, Chiang Mai has some of the worst Air Pollution year round, the average tourist will visit Chiang Mai for 1.5 days, after choking walking around or attempting to cross a street in the extreme traffic they move on else where. The national air quality records show it isn't a 2 month period but a 12 month period of substandard air quality. Keeping your head in the sand and pretending there's no problem is part of the problem. Chiang mai lacks all environmental standards, keeping your head in the sand may help filter the air quality though.

@cocoricco, little bit traffic at chiang mai airport ??, i think you never come here..
and about fresh air: most of the year is the best air here in Chiang mai, the problem is only around 2 months every year

How many have been arrested for illegal burning? Zero, this is Thailand remember. I hope it completely drives all the tourists away for good. Once Thailand has no tourist dollars, they will probably be in a better mood to start dealing with people illegally burning. Until that time, Sabai, Sabai

Karma! That's why the Shinnawatra Idea to make it a tourist hub failed...they can't even clean up their own city or district, so many tourist flocking to Luang Prabang. How could you ever expect them to develope the country. They expanded the Chiang Mai Airport with little traffic while the Phuket Airport with 8 million tourists is a bottle neck. Go to Phuket or Bangkok for fresh air! The 2 most developed places in Thailand with standards and good governance! Like the floods in the central area drowning under Puea Thai incompetence , let the Northerners choke on another incompetent government! All their leaders live in high end dry and fresh air Areas of Bangkok!

Since most seem to be involved with the burning or at least does nothing to prevent it then nobody should complain about the haze except for the random tourist that might travel there.....these thing require education and a will to do better from the local population else it will just go on and on and on..... I do really love this country but one of the few things that I really hate about it is how little it's people care about polution...throwing garbage everywhere is the name of the game, everyone does it and nobody cares, should you mention it when you see it you can very easy come in "bad standing", so sad .
