UAE warns Thaksin against politicking

The United Arab Emirates will ask fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to leave the country if he is found to be using it as a political base to attack the government, vice foreign minister Panit Wikitset says.

"The UAE has informed the Foreign Ministry that if former prime minister Thaksin uses the country as a base to provoke [his supporters] to stage political rallies or attack the Privy Council, he will be asked to leave immediately," Mr Panit said yesterday.

The UAE would allow Thaksin to stay as a businessman or a normal citizen only.

Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 coup and returned to Thailand briefly to face corruption charges.

He fled the country in October last year just before the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions sentenced him to two years in jail for abusing his power.

    @YrDad

I'm not upset with the current government, I'm just commenting on their performance and highlighting areas they have promised to address and improved but have currently, in my humble opinion, failed to do so.

It's actually what the government/PAD were doing this time last year, so for you to get upset by my comments seems a slight overreaction.

By suggesting I live my HOME if I don't like it, is the same argument a child uses when he doesn't get his own way. By expanding the debate and giving credit where credit is due, and giving constructive criticism where one feels the need, is how an open and democratic country moves forward.

Despite the best efforts of the PAD and others, Thailand is, at least in theory, a democratic country where a degree of freedom of speech is possible.

You are entitled to your opinion just like I am entitled to mine.

    Hi..
It is not a matter of defending someone, or asking why bilateral relations have not been severed with another country..and..if someone is guilty of offence, he needs to be punished. But, the basic issue is that the whole case is not strong enough. There is a court ruling, but the situation and circumstances, is good enough for the defendant to get the benefit of doubt in the extraditing country, Dubai or Cambodia or wherever. The Thai Embassy in Phnom Phen had requested for extradition thro Cambodia's External Affairs Ministry, who had refused to accept the request for extradition ONLY. The authority TO DECIDE WHETHER TO EXTRADITE OR NOT, IS THE COURTS IN CAMBODIA, who will hear both the sides to the issue.

    Hi Bob (comment 18)

As a former Dubai resident, let me correct some of your misunderstandings regarding the emirate.

For the record, I'm not one of their biggest supporters but I feel it is important to address one or two of your comments.........

    1. Taksin DID NOT carry out his interview with 'The Times' reporter in a mosque in Dubai. Many Muslims would actually find what you said quite offensive.

    2. Taksin sold his controlling stake in Manchester City Football Club Limited to the ABU DHABI UNITED GROUP, who are controlled by the ruling Al-Nayan family, who are different from the Al-Maktoum family who rule Dubai. The Abu-Dhabi government as of last year, had the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world of $400,000,000,000.

Taksin did make a profit on the sale, but surely that suggests 'good business' on his part. The sale was authorized and sanctioned by the FSA (UK watchdog) and Taksin paid UK capital gains tax on the profit he made.

    3. The government of Dubai have not 'renegade on paying trillions and trillions of dollars' in debt. They have asked for a 6 month extension on a $60 billion loan. Granted this is still a lot of money but it's not trillions and trillions and they have only asked for more time.

I'm not sure what connection you are trying to imply between Taksin, his sale of MUFC and the current financial crisis in Dubai. Apart from Taksin living in Dubai (with their consent) he has no other connection to their recent financial troubles.

    Diss #17,

You are right. My only question is why not asking for Thaksin extradition? Or cancel all the bilateral agreements?

Ever since Takky Shinegra.(cheap Japanese whiskey), has been in Dubai he has used it to instigate and cause mayhem and insurrection in Thailand by his phone in messages to his protesters, soap opera shows.T.V.interviews and various other methods such as an interview with "The Times of London" carried out in his mosque in Dubai confirmed in writing. What about all the blood red shirted thugs and warriors who visit him on a regular basis to get their orders and receive some pocket money. This Sheikdom will never never refuse depots sanctuary when billions of dollars are at stake. Who bought Manchester City from Lt Kernel Takky for a profit of 400%? Look at the events of the past few days where Dubai has renegade on paying their debts of trillions of dollars to International Financial Institution including banks and stock broker’s world wide. This could easily cause the world financial system too collapse because of their greed. "WOW". Honesty and Integrity. It is not rocket fuel technology to see what he is doing from Dubai. It is beamed across continents and countries world wide.
    Stay tuned. Never HAPPEN.

    Is this really newsworthy?

There is absolutely nothing new in this article.

No direct quotes from anybody in the Dubai or UAE governments. Just the always amusing 'foot in mouth' Kasit, who has done more damaged to this country's international reputation than anybody else.

If the UAE are quite happy to have Taksin in their country as both a normal citizen and a businessman they either don't care about or do not believe the charges that the military government claim he has committed. What does this say for the international reputation of Thailand?

Why isn't Suthep, Kasit et al demanding Taksin's extradition and threatening to cancel bilateral agreements?

Once again more smoke and mirrors from the government when they should be addressing more pressing matters.................the economy, corruption, violence in the south etc.

This government really does seem short on ideas but long on hypocrisy.

BP is just trying to fill the pages with news -- but zero information. Who in UAE informed ? is what makes the news authoritative.

Unless thailand can bail out dubai world huge US$60 billion debt, UAE is not going to kick any businessman out. Dubai has bigger problem than thaksin and dubai may go bankrupt and go begging IMF for money, all the businessman will flee including thaksin. He is a businessman first before he became a prime minister so he will not stand by and watch his business go down with dubai world. If thailand wants thaksin badly, thai government has to pay for it.
