PM says price remarks 'twisted'

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is insisting she was misquoted last week over her comments on inflation and says she does not blame people for believing goods prices have gone up.

A vendor tells Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra about retail rice prices at the Pichai food market in Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi province Monday. She visited to survey food prices and listen to locals’ complaints about the cost of living. PATTANAPONG HIRUNARD

During her visit to the Pichai fresh market in Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi province Monday, she said she was upset about reports of her saying that inflation was negligible and that people's perceptions were wrong.

Do we believe her? , not a chance because it took her a week to "discover "her remarks were twisted and I am sure this discovery coincided with all the negative feedback.

Isn't it now typical of her to blame others and never accept responsibility.

Some posters boast about this being a totally free market which it is apart from price controls, currency, tax and customs duty manipulation.

    1.) See 3.)
2.) Go to Google and type Thailand+failure, and see the results
    3.)
Suggest you should not belief into fabricated figures made by the goverment, and the goverments owned state enterprises.

Discussion 28. Hillfarang who was in power in 2010. Yes it was the Democrats. I think it's clear what silkpit means. Since this current government took over the economy is starting to dive. Get ready it's going to be a scary ride.

D33@johninbkk - but the governement does intefer in prices - a prime example being the 'management' of energy (fuel and gas) prices through the oil fund. Indeed the government ministers seem frequently to talk about controlling prices

If you look at the current CPI, comparing April 2011 to April 2012, you'll see that price increases are comparatively small:
    http://www.indexpr.moc.go.th/price_present/cpi/data/index_47_e.asp?list_month=04&list_year=2555&list_region=country

Energy prices, a key contributor to food prices, are seasonal. April is a peak month for Thailand. Prices will natural drop in the coming months, and this is the point YS was trying to make. In a pure free market, the government cannot interfere with market prices.

Discussion 17: 100% correct (but political incorrect).

And where will it end?? The talks to reduce the US. deficit is irrelevant for any practical reason. Even if The White House and the Senate/Congress agrees there will still be a huge deficit.. it just tick a little-bit slower to the final overture...

"she felt hurt about news reports that she had said people's misperceptions were at fault for thinking that goods prices had surged. She had actually said that transport costs and seasonal fluctuations had made people feel product prices were higher than before."

This is what is called "a play with words"

Afraid the PM with her tears has misinterpreted what we mean when we say that politics is as much about emotions as facts. Voters are on the whole irrational and that the facts do not stand a chance once what their emotions and feelings take hold. The wise politician says she understands (even if she doesn't) and promises to dig into the real cause of the problem and do her best to address it. She also does not make promises she cannot deliver in reality. Perhaps this whole episode is an example of what happens when the PM tries to think and speak for herself without the minders and script

    Discussion 24 : silkpit

"Thailand over the past years has joined the worst of managed countries in the world, thanks to the absolute failure of putting the right policies in place, transparently & systematically and in line with the required globalisation and free market mechanisms. As a result, Thailands economy and staus amongst competing countries has fallen to the bottom few, felt by the working people of the Nation."

    1) Your opinion about Thailand ("bottom") is not supported by the facts. Economic Intelligence report: "Owing to the strong performance of the economy in the first two quarters of 2010, the Economist Intelligence Unit has revised up its GDP growth forecast for the year as a whole from 4.1% to 7%. Growth will moderate to 4% in 2011."
    2) "Absolute failure" is exaggerated hyperbole.
    3) Any positive suggestions?
