Poll: Govt fails economic exam

A majority of people in the Northeast believe the government’s effort to combat the rising cost of living had failed as product prices increased while wages remained low, according to the result of a survey by E-Saan Poll released on Wednesday.

But the government received good marks in other areas.

The E-Saan Business and Economic Research Centre at Khon Kaen University, or E-Saan Poll, conducted a survey on the performance of the government on May 4 and 5, seeking opinions from 1,033 people in 20 northeastern provinces.

spiceman (#10) - "...her infamous 'Bridge Towing' operation"

Once again forgetting/ignoring whose proposal it actually was.....

    spiceman 10 - 'Inflation explosion'? It's only a 2.7% increase . . .

The government indeed failed the economic exam like most other things it meddled with... If it spent more time addressing and resolving Thailand's problems rather than deviously plotting for Thaksin's return, we'd all be much happier and doubtless... A BLOODY SIGHT BETTER OFF.

SteveCM D8 - each survey group is different, so your breakdown applied to only one survey. And seems skewed since only about 25% of Thai students enter the University system, it is unlikely that a rural region would have a higher percentage of individuals with a degree.

In general polls are not very good indicators, as their results can be easily skewed by choice of questions, sample groups, etc. Then add in the Thai saving face mentality which makes it impolite to bad mouth someone and the results will always be skewed favorably.

Polls are polls, a public opinion but subject to all sorts of ifs and buts. In this case the poll suggests widespread dissatisfaction with the govt over economic policies (perhaps the single biggest expectation of any govt) and yet everyone seems to love Yingluck. You don't have to be too educated to read through all the news and realise Yingluck is just a puppet, a pretty women whom everyone goes easy on while not holding her responsible for any of the disappointments and failures of the first 9 months.

As to the Isaan poll, I find it doubtful that 30% have degree while the next biggest percentage is 25% who don't even have a grade 6+ education. It's in poor taste to call all Isaan people too dumb to vote or give an opinion but you can't blame the educated taxpaying urbanite for believing they are rather simple in their politic judgment, favouring a complete novice for prime minister and believing the Thaksin is a complete innocent lamb who deserves to be running our country from exile.

What amazes me the most is the fact that PM YS totally failed to see that inflation explosion was imminent, as a result of her loose fiscal policies, despite of her extensive education, including basic Economics, both at home and abroad. Did she sleep through her economic classes or something? This sure remind me of her infamous "Bridge Towing" operation, this time, economically, instead of hydro-dynamically!

    SteveCM D8.

Your point is a good one but I would add that you don't need an education to have an opinion, everyone has opinions and a poll like this seeks to find out what they are.

    drsmith D5.
You don't need an education to make your opinions worth listening to, nor does an education guarantee that you will have an better understanding of matters, that is why educated people don't all hold the same political opinions.

A PS for drsmith (#5) - "...Isaan people with NO education..."

Breakdown of respondents' education for a previous E-Saan Poll (March 2012):
    Grade 6 or lower - 25.3%
    Grade 9 - 9.7%
    Grade 12/vocational certificate - 18%
    Associate degree/higher vocational certificate - 11.6%
    Bachelor’s degree - 30.5%
    Master’s degree & PhD - 4.7%

    "NO education"? Really?

drsmith (#5) - "Isaan was not affected by the flood..." & "...Isaan people with NO education...".

Amazing. In fact, Isaan was badly flooded before Central Thailand & BKK last year - though it was largely ignored by the BKK-centric media. Do you also imagine there are no schools or colleges in Isaan? No universities - not even the one that conducted the poll you're reading about?

"The Outstanding Politician Handicap" seems to be a one horse affair with the exciting new filly Yingluk disappearing into the distance, followed at a great distance, by three clapped out old nags, Abhisit, Chuwit and Chalerm.
