KANCHANABURI : The cabinet yesterday approved 203 projects worth over 30 billion baht to support the development of a deep-sea port and an industrial estate in Dawei city of Myanmar.

The government also approved short-term measures to curb the cost of living.

Acting government spokesman Anusorn Iamsa-ard said the mobile cabinet meeting approved projects worth 33.11 billion baht to be implemented in eight provinces in the lower Central Plains to support development projects in Dawei. Its amazing what this people are doing, everyone know that coal fired electricity generation is the worst possible because of massive pollution and now they want to build a new one although they have the clean gas just close by. Hopefully the Myanmar government / people wont allow that but as usually the people who handle this project will grease their way through.

This plan has been around for some time. In less than three years ASEAN will become a free trade area. Thailand must act if it is to gain anything from the removal of import duties. This includes developing the trade connections with Burma via Mae Sot. The Burmese have done much on their side opposite Tak Province, but the Thai government is still dragging their heels.

Has anybody checked with the Myanmar Government and the local people for approval? Has an EIA and an EHA been done? Why are tax payers baht being used to build this project? Mai pen rai - no need for this stuff in Myanmar - just do it! Coal fired power plant in Myanmar - don't think so Thailand. Locals don't want it and you underestimate the power of the local population in this area.

@Disc 1 - This started under the Dem administration. But either way the government isn't really investing in Dawei. They are only supporting one of Thailand's largest construction firm Italian-Thai Development in getting contracts to develop the area. Italian-Thai needs the government to government talk in order to obtain the contracts.

Now that Myanmar is opening to International trade, it is natural & prudent for Thailand to be the first to invest.

Who said that this government isn't doing anything? :>))
