Marketing guru focuses on the sunny side in creating 'Brand Thailand'

Winkreative's Tyler Brule has partnered with the Pheu Thai government to create an investor-friendly image of the country and the gameplan is to leave all negatives _ political instability, corruption and sleazy stereotypes _ out of the discussion

The name Shinawatra has long been synonymous with Thai political marketing savvy and Ms Yingluck's government is no exception, having brought in Winkreative's Tyler Brule to ''brand'' Thailand.

The aim, according to a press release on the collaboration, is to tell ''the story of Thailand as a dynamic, progressive nation [that] will challenge perceptions and engage directly with a focused target audience to affirm existing, and attract new, foreign investment.''

I think the goal of this “marketing guru” is to make money for himself - and I don’t blame him for that. But because he only wants to show the sunny sides of Thailand and ignore anything not so good (he mentions the PAD airport closure but he “forgets” the burning of Bangkok) anyone will with open eyes will easily recognize that he tells a very one sided story. So anyone who really wants to know about Thailand will look at other sources and dismiss his campaign because it is just one sided.
But I guess this is what his Thai payers want: Write a fairytale about Thailand.
If people don’t believe it then write another one, and another one, …

Good luck Tyler Brule. Refusing to even acknowledge the obvious negatives for a balanced report on the ‘product Thailand’ he wants to promote and instead play like everything is fine is moronic. This is 2012 and people are on the move and on the internet. For him to pitch the country while not even willing to discuss the problems because, “It’s not the theme” or “That is not part of the campaign” shoots his credibility out the door. Ignoring the truth about Thailand and claiming all is well is, well, a lie by omission and quite honestly makes him look like a fool who has just set foot in Thailand for the first time.A balanced image is far better.
