Suriyasai: 2006 coup a lesser evil

The Sept 19, 2006 coup is the lesser of two evils compared to the reconciliation bill proposed by Gen Sonthi Boonyaritgalin, the coup maker, Suriyasai Katasila said on Sunday.

Mr Suriyasai, coordinator of the Green Politics Group, was commenting on the draft bill proposed by Gen Sonthi as an urgent agenda for deliberation by the House of Representatives.

In proposing the bill, Gen Sonthi essentially is staging another coup - to retake the power he took from the Thaksin Shinawatra government in 2006 and return it to Thaksin.

The trouble with Gen Sonthi's reconciliation bill is that he is one of the major beneficiaries of its provisions. Starnger than fiction!

The coup was an evil nonetheless. And nothing good can ever come from evil. Never has. Never will.

I remember the coup in 2006 very well. No bloodshed and the people gave flowers to the soldiers. The coup did not really affect the life of the ordinary people and even the politicians were not harmed. During the time of General Surayud Chulanont , it was quiet , safe and people went after their businesses. After some time, the military gave the power back to the people and Thaksins Power People Party came to power and Samak and Thaksin’s brother-in-law Somchai Wongsawat ruled the country until December 2008. After that, the Democrats took over. Coups are undemocratic and never good, but at least we had a peaceful and quite life at that time in Thailand.

Usually a smart person would test the temperature of the water before he jumps in, a fool will jump in anytime and complaints why its so cold. Blaming nature for giving him cold water in the middle of winter is testamount to the brain power he possesed. Similarly, people should not complaint about past few years problems if they had not supported the yellow shirt to stage coup. Every Buddhist should know one the basic rule, cause and effect. Now the 'devil' has decided to return then why chase him out in the first place, dont want to see the 'devil' after benfiting from him for 4 years then out of thailand. Thailand is a free country no one will stop you from leaving the country.

Strictly from a foreigners standpoint I believe Surayasai is correct. During the 2006 coup, things were not bad for foreigners. Unfortunately, when you have a majority political party that is raping and pillaging Thailand's financial resources through corruption at such a massive rate, the entire country will be brought down if something is not done about it. Gen Prem gave the foreword just how serious is this problem. Not one politician will heed his words as they fight to get their financial share while they still hold power. Reconciliation is the smoke screen to the true intent, which is to control ALL govt budgets and enrich themselves.

What did anyone expect from the yellow shirt leader of the coup? Stealing democracy with a coup, he believes, is preferable to a referendum which asks citizens opinions. Preferable to the 1% wealthy elite only, I think

    People get real.
When this "reconciliation bill" is enacted, then ANARCHY is here.

Well, he would say that, wouldn't he? As a prime organiser of the PAD, Suriyasai worked tirelessly to bring about the collapse of democratic government in Thailand.

As for "toppling the justice system", that is just baloney. All that is being proposed is to rescind democratically decisions that were taken forward by bodies, such as the Assets Scrutiny Committee, that were created by the unelected junta.

"Mr Suriyasai said the bill would not get approval from the House of Representatives without the support of the Pheu Thai Party." What an extraordinary statement - of course it won't! Pheua Thai has a clear majority in the House and made no secret of their intentions when they were elected. It's called parliamentary democracy, Mr Suriyasai; not the 30% "democracy"(!) that your mob were advocating.

what Mr Suriyasai thinks a coup, thaksin will be forgiven its just a case of when. maybe sooner country is in trouble now . time will tell
