Thaksin pins hopes on unity bills

Ex-PM will return 'when reconciliation is real'

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra said his chance of returning to Thailand from self-exile lies with the reconciliation bills which are now with the House of Representatives.

"We have to wait until reconciliation [with anti-Thaksin groups] is really happening," Thaksin told a Japanese newspaper when asked when he thinks he will go back to Thailand.

Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper quoted Thaksin as saying he would wait to see if parliament passes a national reconciliation bill which would grant an amnesty to all parties, including himself, involved in political wrongdoings between late 2005 and mid-2010.

gleentea 37 - FYI, after that ruling, the 'Srivijaya warriors' applied to the appeals court and were immediately granted bail. They never saw a day in prison.

Answer: "All except one of the 85 "Srivijaya warriors", supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), were on Thursday sentenced to jail terms ranging from nine months to two-and-a-half years"
Further charges are pending. I'd guess that the number of convicted red shirts are at the moment a lot less than 84.
The red myth that no PAD members have been convicted of crimes can be laid to rest.

Very true. One convicted criminal is evading justice and hiding out in Dubai.

The really sad part is that a very large group of people – for sure not the majority – let someone think for them so they don’t get a headache (buat hua) from thinking too much or at all.

Thaksin says "We have to wait until reconciliation is really happening," before he can return to Thailand. As is the case with many of Thaksin’s quotes it is necessary to translate them to reveal what he really means. I believe what he really meant to say is he will not return until he has been granted a full amnesty and he can return to pursue his goal of becoming president Thaksin, despite his many and frequent comments that he has forsaken politics. Or were his words about giving up politics just more honest mistakes?

'MPs will explain to the people how the two pieces of legislation will benefit them'.

How will they ? They benefit Thaksin but not the people/the nation. It is not possible to legislate reconciliation. An amnesty yes and that is what the so called reconciliation bill is, nothing more than.

There will never be reconciliation as long as he plays his political games. Hopefully he will never come back. He encompasses the rot in the political situation in Thailand. Self serving greed, corruption, nepotism and lawlessness. His Putin Russian style of democracy has no place in civilized Thailand.

The last sentence should have read:

Disc27 ggh - It's true there are people above the law in Thailand.
I presume you disagree with this state of affairs.
In which case, I'd be interested in hearing your argument for the reconciliation bill which will ensure that more people are above the law... Or are you only concerned that Thaksin isn't above the law? (Yet)
