Army says it didn't kill anyone at temple

The army yesterday insisted soldiers did not kill people at Wat Pathum Wanaram during the crackdown on red shirts on May 19, 2010 after police testifying in court had implicated the army.

Deputy army spokesman Winthai Suwari made the statement in defence of the army's security operations after the court heard testimony on Monday from witnesses and investigators probing the temple deaths.

During the hearing, police confirmed that five of the six people killed at Wat Pathum Wanaram during the crackdown were shot with bullets normally used by military forces.

    jib - This is about the red shirt apo0logists that comp-lain about the deaths in 2010 but NEVER raise their voice about other deaths, even the almost daily ones in the South. Unless it somehow supports their "agenda", it doesn't matter. Completely hypocritical. Apparently red shirt deaths are more important than a farmer or teacher in Yala.

    brilliant 46 - Youtube videos clearly show *soldiers* at Tak Bai. The previous Dem government dropped all charges against the military for Tak Bai, ruling that soldiers committed no crime. The same for the Rohinga boat people - the Dems ruled the soldiers innocent of all actions. See the pattern?

    "I have never thought that we would have a state which has the people killed and seriously injured, and then accuses the people of the crimes. This is unacceptable... Even if the PAD has done wrong, the government has no right to hurt the people." - AV, 2008

    Too bad you didn't bring all these points up when innocent protesters were killed at Tak Bai by stuffing them like cordwood into trucks.

    Do you include "powers from outside Thailand" in this statement? Who also said;
    “The protesters are exerting mob rule over the rule of law, which I can't accept.” (Thaksin)

    There were quite a few foreign reporters at the temple who all gave repeated testimony that they saw no men in black at the temple. Only unarmed civilians/medics were killed at the temple. A youtube video clearly shows three soldiers on the BTS rails firing on the temple. Dozens of witnesses said they saw gunfire coming from the BTS rails. No 'men in black' were ever killed or captured.

    If the red shirt protestors arbitrarily used the weapons seized from army, the soldiers' causalty figure during the April/May 2010 crackdown would not be such a low score.

    Dom Dunn, I can see why you're vilified and despised more than most other contributors to BP, to claim it was a small disturbance and that only a few buildings were burnt down and that it was a stitch up to put blame on the reds is ludicrous. Ask anyone in Bangkok how stressful it was, it is not normal to have the centre of your city under siege with an armed militia for 2 months, their leaders spoke openly about burning down the city if they were forced out and that is exactly what happened in a systematic manner that create widespread damage to more than 30 buildings. When has that ever happened before anywhere in the world. The reds controlled the area, it's doubtful that the PAD or allied group would have been able to set fire to so many buildings, nor would they want to given the support they get from many owners of those properties. This continual assertion that the reds were innocent unarmed lambs just protesting reasonably and peacefully is nonsense.

    bangkokbob 30 - "I personally saw weapons behind the stage at Rajaprasong."
    FYI: The weapons were paraded on stage. The UDD leaders said, paraphrased, 'these weapons were confiscated from soldiers to keep them from being used against us protesters'.

    englishbob 32 - Youtube videos clearly show fully armed soldiers with armored vehicles already there at Phan Fa the night the MiB first appeared, proving armed soldiers did indeed come first. Then there was the 2009 April crackdown by armed soldiers firing live rounds, before the MiB even existed.

    Apparently, to red shirt apologists, a handful of burned buildings and a few lives are just collateral damage. As long as they got their message across(whatever that was).
    I wish they would show the same concern for the lives of Thai citizens taken almost daily in the South.
