Team to work with US on U-tapao

Supreme Commander Gen Thanasak Patimapakornhas set up a working committee to work with the United States on the use of U-tapao airbase by Nasa for atmospheric studies and as a centre for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, a source at the Royal Thai Armed Force Headquarters said.

The committee is headed by Lt-Gen Surapong Suwan-ath, the director of joint operations, and the directors of operations of the three armed forces.

The source said the committee would start work after the cabinet approved the US request for use of U-tapao.  After that a meeting would be held with the US side to draft the terms of reference, or a memorandum of understanding.

@D4: The armed forces didn't strike any deal. The story clearly says they are awaiting Cabinet, in other words civilian government, approval before signing any MoU. The root of all problems is people's ignorance.

Apparently the PM, government and military have this all under control.

Now this is the root of this "problem"! The armed forces are interfering in national and international politics, striking deals with other nations and obviously sometimes without the knowledge of the government.

Anyone who thinks this is great news should read yesterdays Post commentary titled "Silence deafening with freedoms at stake", then ask yourself whether we should really believe these people or want them in Thailand.
