Poll: Drugs Thais' biggest concern

A majority of the Thai people ranked drug abuse as the number one social problem, followed by inter-school brawls, according to results of a NIDA Poll released on Saturday.

The poll was conducted on 1,175 people in Bangkok and other provinces between June 26-29 to gauge their opinion on “top five violent situations in Thai society”.

The huge majority, or 88.17 per cent, of the respondents said they saw drug abuse as the most serious problem affecting Thailand.

If the Thai's biggest concern is drug, then they are not focusing on the root cause. It should be corruption, if laws are enforced, the drug problem will naturally decrease, not only that social, economic, political, and environmental problem will decrease as well.

In order of ease of addiction - Heroin, crack cocaine, nicotine, methadone, crystal meth, alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, benzos (tranquilisers and anti-depressants), GHB.
You'll notice marijuana and ecstasy don't even make the list.
You'll also notice alcohol and nicotine are in the top 6.
Recreational drug use is very widespread. Addiction isn't.

@englishbob, good for you that you have friends doing coke and marijuana on a regular basis ... but if you really believe that they can control it, not become addicted and function normally in society then you are indeed very gullible ... it is hard enough to quit smoking, quitting drugs or alcohol is hard and as they say once an alcoholic always an alcoholic !
But when it comes to legalizing the stuff, then I do fully agree, legalize it, legalize gambling too and let the state and society reap the benefits.

It is simple and straight forward to understand that drug abuse is against thai laws, irrespective of whether you enjoy it or have enough money to buy it. Personal freedom can't be above the laws.

Disc6 Android - When you wrote that post, did you think I was unaware that the use of drugs was illegal?
My point is that most people who use drugs do so without any negative effects. For every addict who loses control, there are thousands of people who regularly enjoy drugs and still live normal lives.
Again you can't understand my simple post... It's not about money or class. It's about personal freedom of choice.

Corruption, human trafficking or lack of democracy are arguably more serious problems than drug abuse. As a matter of fact Thais are the biggest alcohol drinkers in SE Asia, but this doesn't seem to worry our politicians.

Kinda hard to control drugs when the police are so corrupt and involved in this drug trade also.

D4- From my perspective you are correct.
With Broadband internet expanding it's only a matter of time before a "New World Order" mindset
becomes Truely Worldwide.(Responsible Adult Choices will no longer be Local/National)
Elected Officials must adapt to this paradigm otherwise there days are numbered!

Discussion 4 englishbob : drug abuse is against the thai laws, irrespective of it is committed by rich or poor people. Rich people are not above the law.

The use of yaba is at an all time high in Thailand.and maybe that accounts for a degree of the behavioral changes amongst the population.in the past,Thaksin's war on drugs was considered to be too extreme, but yet now it is completely out of control.
