Fire, explosion at Bangchak refinery

Bangchak Petroleum has shut down its oil refinery in Bangkok's Sukhumvit Soi 64 for a week and an 80,000 barrel-per-day crude distillation unit for at least 30 days following a fire and explosion at the plant on Wednesday morning.

It was the second fire at the soi 64 refinery in 18 months.

The explosion about 7.30am in an industrial zone in inner Bangkok surrounded by residential areas  set off towering flames and sent two columns of thick  black smoke into the sky that could be seen across the capital.

The refinery was built before much of any community was there. The only thing I remember around that time in the area was the Venus zipper factory and a few small businesses. Nonetheless, it is a very old refinery and could probably be refurbished for safety's sake.

Don't move the communities, which have been there longer, move the refinery out of a built-up area. 2 accidents in 18 months is appalling.

"Another refinery fire" - Wrong. Another fire at the same refinery in 18 months.

No problem I saw on Channel 3 that the Bangkok Mayor rush to the fire to hand out cheap 2bt cloth masks. What a guy.
