Tab for paddy mortgaging hits B258bn

The Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives says the country has so far spent almost 258 billion baht under the mortgage scheme to shore up paddy prices.

During the programme's first phase from Oct 7, 2011 to Feb 29 this year the bank spent 118.4 billion baht on a total of 7 million tonnes of rice from some 1.1 million farmers.

It has already received 4 million tonnes of milled rice.

Keeping prices artificially high for what? They will bankrupt the country sooner or later if they keep on keeping this up. Many of the agricultural goods have rotted away in warehouses, making them unsellable. Many farmers also do not benefit as it is still the middle men who profits and preys on the farmers.
