Warrant out for lese majeste suspect

The court has approved a warrant for the arrest a 63-year-old woman accused of lese majeste who is being assessed for possible mental illness, and a police panel has been set up to handle the case, police spokesman Piya Uthayo said on Wednesday.

Pol Maj-Gen Piya said the warrant was issued for the arrest of Thitinant Kaewchantranont, a Thai citizen now a resident of New Zealand, for lese majeste under Article 112 of the Criminal Code.

Mrs Thitinant allegedly made a rude gesture towards an image of His Majesty the King outside the Constitution Court on July 13, when the court was about to make a ruling on the constitutionality of the charter amendment bill.

Freedom of speech cannot be permitted because that leads to such horrors as ... truth telling.

Even worse, freedom of speech has been known to lead to such things as a well-informed opinion, a loss of ignorance, and in extreme cases, free speech results in actual knowledge, something that terrifies censors who beleive that ignorance is bliss, though bliss for whom is less obvious.

Sometimes you wonder if this country can only handle problems that are simple to handle. A women or any Thai should have the freedom to express themselves. If it means that no person is injured, maimed or killed. The phrase "Sticks and stones may break my bones...but! Names will never hurt me!"

They should have just let her use her ticket to go home and saved a lot of taxpayers money on this bs. This stuff is getting a little bit like the neighborhood spies in China to watch and report pregnant women

I'm sure that I am only one of the many thousands of people who read that artical and just shook his head. Does a 63 year old suspected mentally disturbed woman need 2 police officers to ensure she doesn't escape 'justice' for making a rude gesture at a photograph? I'm sure that the only place in the world besides Thailand that this could occur is North Korea. This is an embarrassment for Thailand.

I feel another embarrassing PR episode coming up.

Does Thailand really need to go after old and mentally I'll people because they allegedly said something wrong? What a way to destroy the coutnry's reputation even further.
