SPOT ON. BLOB 123. the root of this problem just lies across the border...indeed thailand needs to get tough with malaysia.Malaysian PM definitely knows about the sanctuary these insurgents get when they just crossover the border Sg Kolok, kelantan state and Betong, perak state of malaysia.thailand has to deal with malaysia as they did in 2004 and 2005 but nothing much cameout of the meetings at that time.go ahead thailand, get the message across to MALAYSIA.ENOUGH IS ENOUGH OF THESE KILLINGS!!!!!

D2:"When you do a road patrol you patrol on the "wrong side" of the Road so that you face the oncoming traffic. Anyone with infantry training knows that. But as Thai soldiers and police have no infantry training they don't know how to behave on the battlefield."
Terrorists don't give a ... what lane of the road you're marching/rolling on. Thai soldiers and poice know very well what to do.

For whatever reason the militants are campaigning for, their actions are simply totally unacceptable
and the Thai authorities must take swift action to eradicate them without any compromise !!! We do not want to see any further lost of lives both civilians and government officials !!! The militants are not fit to call themselves Muslims !!!

Mr montreal, EXCELLENT post. As we all saw during the government headed by the sainted Abhisit, the situation was totally quiet and everyone in the South loved the Bangkok government. The army was not dealing arms, the police totally halted drug smuggling and the fully employed, happy workers in the South marched to work with a light step and whistling the Thai national anthem. Then the Pheu Thai came along and everything went horrible again.

Note to elvis: The problem did not begin in 2004. It began in 1900. And the armed gangs of today began in the 1970s. When the minority of people of the South get over what happened to their great-great grandfathers, things will get much better. Until then, suppression and anti-terrorism seem the only viable answers.

Khun Elvis #27, I have no problem whatsoever if Thai people as a whole decide to give autonomy to the region or even full independence to become its own Islamic Kingdom of Patani Raya. However, given the current divisive political climate in Thailand, I doubt any decision can be reached at all, while more soldiers and villagers continuing to be killed on a daily basis. So, there are 2 decisions to be made, either to set it free or root out the insurgency at all cost once and for all, as we did it before TS messing it up. The problem with TS is he tried to fix it when it wasn't broken. And when it was finally broken because of his own incompetence, he couldn't fix it, and the rest is history!

And the current Defence minister is holding press-conferences about things that happened 25 years ago. This shows how damging it is when someone becomes a minister bec: Who's your daddy or who's your boss attitude.

There is nothing wrong with a certain level of autonomy, autonomy is not independence. The underlying problem is the help this bandits get from across the border. They can easily rush off behind the border, they also get financing, logistic and training from there. It is also an open secret that various circles in Saudi Arabia supply money, they usually work under the cover of welfare organisations and are financed by the state etc. One absolute crucial thing to end this conflict is Thailand must get tough with Malaysia there is no way around because all this stuff runs through them.

Proper training and equipping the soldiers is paramount. And a total re-think of military strategy. But winning the hearts and minds also is important. The Thai business community could help by providing meaningful employment opportunities in the deep South. PTT could build their multi-billion baht technology school there, seeing as how alot of their revenues comes from that region. Infrastructural improvements, a BOI zone, refineries, etc. As long as the government and business continues to see the deep South as a place of uneducated rubber tappers things will never improve. When the southern people finally believe they have prosperty and too much to lose they will be vigilent in protecting their region and the terrorists will lose their support base.
