South workshop set for Aug 8

A workshop on ways to tackle problems in the southern border provinces will be held on Aug 8, Deputy Prime Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa said on Sunday.

Gen Yutthasak said it would be the first meeting of the operations centre for solving problems in the southern border provinces, to be chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Representatives of the military, police and administrative officials including provincial governors and district officers from all over the country would be invited to attend the meeting.

Allow me to offer some free advice which, if heeded, would save Thailand many hundreds of billions of Baht and around 100 years or so: basically, you have two choices to settle discord in the south - 1. Thailand capitulates and gives the southern states autonomy. Rather similar to the British finding peace with the IRA in Northern Ireland. It does leave a rather bad taste in ones mouth to see murderous scum now running the territory but there is peace. 2. You kill all insurgents.
    The choice is yours, Ms.Yingluk.

thailand..land of smiles....and land of meetings too it seems...quite often when i call up my civil servant friends they are either at a meeting or going to one lol...my sister in law has meetings almost every week (at a hotel!) and out of town training every 2-3 months. I once asked her why is it we (the public) don't see any outcome to all those meetings..she admitted it was more a staff morale exercise (that explains the choice of venue) then a brainstorming session to solve the many problems we face here in the south.

53 weeks since taking power? Now they are just getting round to having a meeting?

I wonder how many 'whitewash' meetings were held in the interim?

Form a committee, schedule some meetings, allocate some funds, do nothing.

This is just a lot of BS. A workshop is not needed. There have been many workshops on this problem already, and there was a commission led by Anand Panyarachun that studied the problems for over a year. The solutions to the southern situation are well known already. But they haven't been implemented because several parties involved in the situation are profiting from it in one way or another. And so they don't really want it to end. And so they hold more workshops and form more committees and command centers.

Presumably the main reason for the lack of interest over the last year from YS is simply because they did not vote for PTP - am I correct ?

What are the odds on Thaksin phoning in.

Ok, it's a start. Southern officers are a must participant and somewhere down the road good to I trust that responsible local views(business people as an example)are part of the process. That is a concern since many local leaders, teachers, police are shot for simply being there.
YS is chairing and I assume that Mr.Chalerm is there as well. Listen first, digest the
information, then decide the next steps. Don't shoot from the hip.
    IMO
