Abhisit: Get serious about the far South

Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said after visiting Pattani on Monday that the government needed to be more serious about tackling the continuing violence in the far South.

englishbob - I'll do you one better. From Deep South Watch: In 2008, before Abhisit was made PM by the military, there were 468 deaths and 819 injuries. In 2009, Abhisit's 1st year in office, 567 deaths and 1084 injuries. An increase of 21% in deaths and 32% in injuries.

Just what were Abhisit's policies in the South again? And please give your sources and numbers to where your 30% claim is coming from - I'm just not seeing it.

Disc23 - Stop being lazy. Go online. See the death tolls. During Abhisit's tenure the death toll was 30% less. Now under Peua Thai it's getting worse and worse... Even you have to concede that.

So whatever Dems were doing worked and whatever Peua Thai are doing isn't working.

bikeme d22 And what particular policies did Abhisit's government implement in the south? In its two and a half years in power, the Democrat-led government was unable to make any significant headway in bringing down the violence.

I agree with your assessment about a refusal to listen to outside ideas, although I don't think that affliction is exclusive to PT and the UDD. The Dems and the PAD are far worse offenders. I do still have hope in Yingluck though.

One of Abhisit's "jobs" as the opposition is to present ideas, either agreeing with or countering the government's position. Democracy allows all members of Parliament to speak their mind and present their ideas.

As others have pointed out, the level of violence under Abhisit administration was lower than under any of the Thaksin controlled governments, yet at the same time Abhisit was tackling the world's worst global economic melt down and big Bangkok protests and annual censor debates from the PTP. While he didn't settle the southern issue, it would appear that his administration had better control of it than others.

The biggest handicap that the PTP and UDD suffer from is their refusal to listen to outside ideas. They seem to feel that only their ideas have merit and everyone else is wrong, even when the majority have an opposing opinion. Perhaps some day they will learn that a good Democracy is the sum of many ideas.

Disc19 - What are you talking about?
Did I sentence someone to jail for terrorism? I pointed out a double standard in Musashi's stance.

The people sentenced were sentenced for public order offences, weapons offences, arson and theft. I am still waiting for someone to be charged for organising and funding the violence.

If you want to debate, please use facts and reality. These conspiracy theories and baseless accusations are boring.

dondumm - "Abhisit's words would have more credability if he had done anything when he was PM."

I know the Southern violence was much less than under the current government. And where is the current government? Getting the tablets for all students, handing out compensation money for actual flood victims, correcting the failures of last year's floods so they won't happen again?
    None of the above.

The red shirters continue their mode of changing the subject when their government is an abject failure. Instead of citing actual progress this government has made based on actual facts, they make statements like "AV, aka the draft dodger" which only proves that they have no interest in due process. I'd like one red shirt to provide a list of accomplishment's of this government. Please?

    Englishbob, D7:

"And Musashi - Abhisit is not a draft dodger. He is someone accused of draft dodging. I distinctly remember you archly stating that you believed in 'Innocent until proven guilty'. But for not this case it appears."

Well, selective logic is used when it falls on the guy you prefer, "...He is accused of draft dodging, but, he is not a draft dodger!"
What about the Red-shirts accused of terrorism without substantiated documents to confirm their accusation, they are now jailed and condemned as "terrorists".

Double standards do exist from this kind of prejudice. "Innocent until proven guilty" you quoted does not apply to Red-shirts or what?

Why this guy don't give his solutions? So we will ask why he did nothing and worst for the South. Pointoffew is perfectly right and the PAd/dems just make a bad and phoney polemique, as usual.

  • Discussion 17 : 06 Aug 2012 at 21.1017

I hope those people calling Abhisit a draft dodger will be prepared to fight a defamation case. The laws on libel is very strict in this country.

  • Discussion 16 : 06 Aug 2012 at 21.0716

So reds let me get this straight. The violence exploded under Thaksin, went down under Abhisit and has exploded again under Yingluck, yet you still blame Abhisit for the problems. Simply unbelievable
