Chinese boxer, judges, referee all beat Kaew for gold

LONDON : The crowd booed and international announcers openly criticised yet another unjust boxing decision that prevented Kaew Pongprayoon from winning a gold medal Sunday morning.

The crowd, foreign commentators and millions around the world saw Kaew defeat Zou Shiming of China for the gold medal in the light flyweight division.

But five judges and referee Yasar Cinar of Turkey saw Zou edge Kaew by one point in each of the rounds, and emerge with victory and gold.

Kaew, gracious as always, accepted the silver. It was a consolation prize, the only medal by Thai boxers at the London Games.

D24: I don't see how you could post that comment having watched the fight. You didn't see it did you? I'm surprised the crowd wasn't throwing bottles at the judges after giving the gold to China. It sounded like a riot was about to go down.

But what really amazes me is the lack of forsight by the Thai coach by not anticipating dodgy decision making by the judges. He should have appealed the second Zou raised his hands in the air.

What's more important than winning the hearts of the Thai people anyway... His cute mom will also be very proud of Kaew..

These Olympians compete with the best in the world, and unfortunately sometimes poor judging does happen. The coach for Kaew and the boxing team should have been more familiar with the rules in order to appeal the judging within the time limits.

Game is like this : there is a winner, there is a loser. Doesn't matter for Kaew to bring silver medal instead gold, to get a medal is already a hard work to achieve. So congratulations for the three people who got medals.
In other side, we cannot congratulate the two times (Abhisit and Yinluck government) Minister of Tourism and Sport Chumpol Silpa-Archa who never pay attention to the Olympic Thai Team, as he never acted cleverly about the tourism during the flood period. So, What did this Minister with the big money for his Ministry ????? It's very pity that the both PM Abhisit & Yinluck award their coalition partner in giving Tourism and Sport Ministry to an incompetent person...
Thailand is a big country, Thailand is a rich country.....
Thailand should be inside the 20 best countries at Olympic Games !!!

The Thai team didnt petition within 5 minutes, too bad.
But there's an interesting article on BBC "Questions raised over London 2012 Olympic boxing scores"

Disc 24 - I watched the fight on TV! Obviously you did not or you would not have made that comment. There was obviously no reason for removing points from the Thai! Disc 23 is right! Too much politics in the judging! I think Thailand should file a protest - not that it would do any good!

Typical and there will more and more of it until people take a stand.

  • Discussion 29 : 12 Aug 2012 at 11.0829

Too bad the Thai team didnt appeal within 5 minutes. So they should not complain now.
But having said that, an interesting scope from BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19212567
Last year Newsnight spoke to Olympic boxing insiders who alleged London 2012 medals could be bought.

We were told $9m had been paid from Azerbaijan to the international boxing authorities in return for two golds.

The International Boxing Authority (AIBA) denied any wrong doing. The IOC found no formal evidence of cash for medals as it stands.

However, some of the results over the last few days have raised some serious questions about the scoring system.

Eyebrows were first raised last Wednesday when Azerbaijan fought Japan.

The Azeri bantamweight Magomed Abdulhamidov won the match despite going down six times in the final round.

After an appeal by Japan the decision was overturned. The boxer from Azerbaijan was out, the Japanese fighter reinstated and the referee was on the next plane home to Turkmenistan.
