Chinese boxer, judges, referee all beat Kaew for gold

LONDON : The crowd booed and international announcers openly criticised yet another unjust boxing decision that prevented Kaew Pongprayoon from winning a gold medal Sunday morning.

The crowd, foreign commentators and millions around the world saw Kaew defeat Zou Shiming of China for the gold medal in the light flyweight division.

But five judges and referee Yasar Cinar of Turkey saw Zou edge Kaew by one point in each of the rounds, and emerge with victory and gold.

Kaew, gracious as always, accepted the silver. It was a consolation prize, the only medal by Thai boxers at the London Games.

A poor decision but let's not go down the corruption route. This is UK and far be it for Thailand to claim anything dodgy happened!

barryw thanks for enlighten us, obviously Thailand doesn't invest as much as Uk for sports and I'm glad because Thailand has many other important stuff to invest in before... Don't you think?

To my mind Kaew won all three rounds. Bearing in mind that millions of dollars of betting money, mostly from Asia, was placed on the fight it would appear that the result was decided before the boxers stepped into the ring.
In this age of technology there must be some other method – computer or electronic – of deciding the result of boxing bouts. For years the sport has had a history of dubious decisions. My sympathies to Kaew. ‘he was robbed’.

It is very possible that the votes for the fight could have been rigged.
The votes in the discussion section to this article als have been rigged.
The votes for Dis.1 were 2 Thumps up and 1 Thump down.
I clicked on Thumps down one time and the Thumps Up went from two to eight.
    Very tricky but true.

Sport is not only increasingly commercialised, it is also increasingly politicised, just as we have seen politics dominate the Eurovision song competition, and Miss World events.

Behold the picture below.Zou's face is completely messed up, Kaew unscathed. Wasn't there a saying about a picture and a thousand words?

The UK and Thailand have a similar number of citizens. Yet the UK, at the time of writing, has 62 medals including 28 golds, and Thailand has a total of two silvers and a bronze. Why might that be?

I am bemused by the loss, and also feel we have been robbed of a gold medal. However, I don't think the media should act as sore losers by writing things such as "Zou holds Kaew's gold medal at the in-ring presentation ceremony". We must hold our heads high.
