Questions over gun ownership and rules governing their use in public are being raised after a senator accidentally shot and killed his long-time partner in Phrae

The tragic fatal shooting of Chanakarn Detkard, 46, by the senator with whom she had two children, has raised serious issues about gun ownership and the handling of private weapons in public places.

DEADLY WEAPONS: The gun, the clip and the bullets.

Last Sunday Chanakarn died from a bullet wound to the stomach after Mae Hong Son Senator Boonsong Kowawisarat, 56, accidentally discharged a weapon at a family gathering to mark Mother's Day, witnesses told police.

Doing the job of politician is so important in Thailand that they are above the law.

I am happy to get at least another update on this story, no matter how many details are still not clear (guess they are still being sorted out by all involved parties so as to provide a final story whith minimum impact for everybody important).

After the previous commentary on BP I was afraid this incident could really be swept under the carpet without follow up. Which might have been the normal course if not the whole world press had reported on this salient story, really hard to beat this headline :-D .

Remember folks,'Don't ever point a gun at someone you don't intend to intimidate, threaten or kill.'

.He is clearly unstable to have a gun.If his reason for owning such a gun was for his self defence by his own admission he must still be carrying a gun.Or have things changed since the shooting and he no longer feels threatened?Either way something is very wrong.

Dis#1 spiceman, after reading this story i realized it was the same case published last week. The same senator, same victim only the story get alittle fancier and more detail. To be continued next week will get more bizarre story. If employer shot his secretary by accident that convincable. If the man shot mistress, commonlaw wife, girl friend whoever the pronoun fit the Thai cultures believe me if it were in USA it is suspicious.

    Parlamentary immunity?
Immunity of murder, manslaughter, theft, sexual abuse of minors, drug production, smuggling and dealing, and of course corruption, apart from a long list of much more hidden agendas of criminals in disuguise of a parlamentary status? In china they would be sentenced and sent on trip with a lethal injection.

"A provincial governor has to give approval for the gun to be carried in that province and the Interior Ministry grants approval for a gun to be carried nationwide. In practice, provincial police determine whether the applicant needs a gun licence and whether they are physically and mentally capable of carrying a weapon. "

And who exactly would tell a Senator "sorry sir, there is no need for you to carry a gun" ?

Another one out on parliamentary immunity and bail.

Just asking, but how many more times will this story change in the coming days (not weeks, as it will be buried by then)? A secretary becomes a mia noi; a submachine gun becomes a pistol; a senator becomes partially paralyzed; whatever next?

How much longer are Thais going to put up with the insane parliamentary immunity fiasco for those who have committed crimes, and not just uittered something in parliament that someone dislikes?

Robin - you ask "are there no real men left any longer." Real men settle their differences by discussion and argument. Only the weak have to resort to guns and violence.
