Massive downpour leaves Phuket reeling

A flash flood wreaked widespread havoc in Phuket Wednesday as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra promised compensation for the damage.

A road in downtown Phuket is awash after the island was hit by an overnight downpour, which put many areas, especially those in Phuket municipality, under water. The situation has since returned to normal. ACHATAYA CHUENNIRAN

Ms Yingluck said the government will provide financial assistance based on the actual damage to economic zones, shops and houses. She did not give the rates of compensation.

Sorry Phuket All the money for flood defences and prevention is being spent to protect Bangkok.By the way they have had the money for the flood defences 6 months and are paying interest on it that is why they have had to increase tax on cigarettes and alcohol. You voted them in I can not!!!

Throwing taxpayers money at a problem doesnt solve the problem .The whole area is covered in concrete effectively creating a swimming pool for flood water .How many trees can you see in the pic ?

    Unregulated concrete runs amok

so instead of fixing a problem like most efficent governments do ,lets spend some more money we do not have(minus commisions) to pay off people

how about compensating the tourists who had they wonderful broshure filled holiday in thailand ruined because of sheer govermental stupidty

Hands up everyone who has received their government compensation for the great flood of last year.
    Anyone? Bueller?

  • Discussion 4 : 23 Aug 2012 at 07.464

Compensation is the answer to everything in Thailand. Instead of fixing problems correctly, throw a few baht to keep the peasants happy

    Surprise!

When you live in a country with heavy monsoon years every year, local government should prepare for this. Cleaning drains and installing bigger drainage pipes would be a good start.

You can't really hold the national government responsible for these mishaps. Local politicians should bear the blame and hopefully get a good beating at the next elections. Taxpayers shouldn't pay compensation for these foreseeable destructions by forces of nature.

    .

Discussion 1 yes the taxpayers will get pissed sooner or later, and so will the tourists.

Compensation being paid instead of preventive measures put in place, who is responsible for unblocking the drains, Thailand needs to get a grip on the let it happen and pay them culture.
