'Cop extortion' video clip goes viral

BURI RAM - A video clip showing a group of men who claimed to be police and copyright officers confronting an internet shop owner and his mother has gone viral and drawn criticism from many Thai netizens who say the law enforcers were abusing their authority.

The 12-minute video clip was uploaded to YouTube by username SuperVit1234, on Aug 19.

The uploader, who identified himself as 30-year-old internet shop owner Virun Kasemrak, said a group of men who claimed to be police and copyright officers raided his shop but did not find any copyright infringement.

Now is the time the Government of Thailand set up a law enforcement division called, 'The Untouchables'. Time to take care of the whole organized crime situation which is getting out of control because it has not been kept in check. I wonder why ?

This is absolutely unforgivable.I hope someone in government really really takes note of this blatant extortion.This same crew including the woman in blue are at it all over thailand.They should all be arrested forthwith and given the most severe sentance.They target anyone Thais or farangs to line their pockets corruptly.
Please please please someone in government take this up and deal with it.we have seen and photographed the same people in Udon Thani and because of it many people are closing busnesses and taking their hard earned money to other countries.
these people are a disgrace.Please let us have some action on this andI hope this newspaper will follow the story forthwith.

"They 'did not find any copyright infringement'? That's unbelievable. The Thai police raid the only shop in Thailand NOT using pirated Windows.....an unlikely story."

You might be surprised to know that after quite a number of raids a few years ago, it seems a few/some/many switched over to legal software. I've entered internet cafes that had the license sticker attached to the computer, some switched to Linux. During that time, no shop in Panthip would install unlicensed Windows or any other illegal software.

Ask anyone who has ever been caught selling pirated merchandise. Police comes, catches, starts bargaining for bribe. Even if you decide to follow the legal process, they suggest that you keep selling the stuff BUT talk to them about 'arrangements'. Once in the police station, you pay around 5,000 baht as tea money, irrespective of which way you choose to handle the case. Everyone including the license holder of the merchandise knows that fake stuff comes from the Thai side of the Thai Cambodia border but who cares, everyone makes their buck. This video is a tip of the iceberg. Nothing will happen, as the police at all levels get their daily bonus from such farce.

This is nothing new. It's just the guy got them on video. All illigal activities are added and supported by police because they get protection money from them. Without the knowledge of police nothing illigal can be done here.
