Govt brushes off tablet PC battery critics

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Ministry has shrugged off complaints from some teachers about the short battery life of the tablet PCs issued under the one-tablet-per-child project, saying it has yet to receive any reports on the issue.

"Let's say, if we find about 8,600 units, tablets, or 1% of the total 860,000 units, have gone bad, we can then raise the issue for an urgent replacement," said ICT Minister Anudith Nakornthap.

The ICT Ministry expects to deliver a total of 860,000 tablets to Prathom 1 (Grade 1) students through the Education Ministry by next month.

Shenzhen Scope Scientific Development did not even check if their batteries meet the spec yet.

"over-charging the battery is safe." what a joke! This is the first time I ever heard anyone said that. On top of that, they admit there is no no auto cut-off system!

Its already starting to be a failure, I bet the tablet will last less than 1 year before teachers abandon it as a teaching tool.

3 months ago the BP reported the contract requirement stated that another 600,000 units were to be delivered by the 13th of September. Why has this become 430,000 by the end of the month ? Aren't contracts in any way binding ?.....couldn't the government use the delay and failure to abide by it to leverage a cost reduction ? Also these days batteries of any reasonable quality are not as much affected by the memory phenomenon like they used to be before. This has all the hallmarks of an 'Epic fail' ! - as my kid would say.
    What's that smell ?....

The government is very adept at shrugging off complaints or brushing aside criticism. Not exactly an open minded approach to improving its performance. As for the contract warranty provisions, the government contracts department could do with a few lessons on how to protect the customer by proper contract wording.

That would be an interesting specification that says the supplier only has to start replacing faulty goods when a threshhold of !% failures has been met, rather than "if it's faulty, it gets replaced, period".
