Villager slain in Pattani

A villager was killed in a drive-by shooting in Yarang district of Pattani province on Friday morning, chief of Yarang police station Pol Col Sakda Charoenkul said.

Witnesses told police that Somchit Thongna, 34, his wife and young daughter were travelling on a motorcycle along the Pattani-Yala road at Moo 1 in tambon Khao Toom of Yarang district when a gunman on another motorcycle fired at him. The attackers then fled.

Somchit was shot in the head and died on the spot. His wife and seven-year-old daughter were slightly injured when they fell from the motorcycle.

When will the killing stop? This is madness! Totally unacceptable for a country like Thailand to continue to tolerate this. I'm wondering why there aren't any travel restrictions for people to this dangerous region? Myanmar has travel restrictions to much of its territory yet Thailand continues to allow travel to the far south despite foreign governments advising their citizens to stay away. I'm wondering why Thailand doesn't follow Myanmar's lead and prevent at least foreigners from visiting that violence plagued region (even though few visit anyway).
