Migrant workers say firm caused loss of legal status

About 33 Myanmar migrant workers yesterday lodged a complaint with the Labour Ministry, saying their employer had taken away their passports and held them until their visas expired.

They have consequently become illegal immigrants.

Moe, 25, a Myanmar national, said she and the other workers had been hired by a jewellery company in Samut Sakhon's Krathum Baen district. The company took away their passports earlier this year.

We all know there are some employers have have grubby, not to mention illegal, practices. They deserve jail time for this type of blatant offense, but it is also really disappointing to hear about the authorities pathetic, half-hearted, and no doubt corrupt responses.

By accepting to pay the overstay penalties the company has admitted guilt, should be prosecuted and punished for this kind inhuman treatment of aliens, should be paying compensations to the workers and should no longer be liable to obtain work permits for aliens, in that way they will be forced to employ Thais and pay a higher salary..maybe they will learn then.
