Prayuth: Decree not really harmful

The army is ready to comply if the emergency decree now imposed in three southernmost border provinces is lifted, but doing this would weaken law enforcement by authorities, Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Monday.

Gen Prayuth, the army chief, was responding to a comment by Lt-Gen Paradorn Pattanathabutr, the National Security Council (NSC) secretary general-designate, that security units would be instructed to re-assess the situation and lift the special law imposed in the three provinces plagued with insurgency.

He said if the emergency decree were lifted, changes would follow because the authorities would not be able to enforce the law immediately when an incident occurs.

"He said if the emergency decree were lifted, changes would follow because the authorities would not be able to enforce the law immediately when an incident occurs".

The Army has a vital role in protecting the country. However, using the Army to enforce laws should only ever be a short term measure in real emergencies because they are not equipped for this role by training or by tradition. Emergency decrees that go on too long do long term damage to respect for the law and great short term damage to justice.

If the normal Thai law really prevents the Police from being "able to enforce the law immediately when an incident occurs" then it should be amended.

Why not just pull out the army and let the place fend for itself. Then let all the people who want to leave come back up North. Teachers and government officals etc., Then wait and see how long before the people ask for help from the murders and cowards. Still they can't kill everybody sooner or later their fighting will go nowhere because when they have shown their true colours, of racism, against other people who don't follow their cause, and when the women and children are murdered or raped, and people robbed or forced to pay because they ain't Muslim. and don't want to live under the yoke of religious oppression. Then the Thai government will have a clear mandate to rid the country of scum!

"..if the emergency decree were lifted, changes would follow because the authorities would not be able to enforce the law immediately when an incident occurs". LOL! The emergency decree - or the army, for that matter - has never brought any solution in the south.
