BMA attacked over flood failure

Pheu Thai gets knives out for governor election

The Pheu Thai party plans to zero in on City Hall's flood management ability, concentrating on alleged corruption, in the upcoming Bangkok governor election campaign.

Troopers from the 12th Army Circle at Jakkrapong camp in Prachin Buri race against time to build a fence more than 100m long on the banks of the Prachin Buri River in Si Maha Phot district to slow down strong river currents. A backhoe is building an earthen embankment about 300m long to prevent run-off from reaching the district’s inner areas. MANIT SANUBBOON

It has already fired the first volley, accusing the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) of graft in the wake of widespread floods induced by heavy rain in many areas.

All the accusing and finger pointing from everybody but the fact is the drainage system in Bangkok is a complete mess and has been this way for a long time. With all the money allocated for clean up and projects over just the last 5 years the city should be in much better shape. Many people have failed the citizens of Bangkok and politicians need to take the blame.

How on earth did this discussion move from floods to gays and lesbians?

ALL prosecutions for corruption and/or abuse of power are politically motivated (rich and powerful people can manipulate the legal system unless they have more powerful enemies).
Having said that, I am still happy every time I hear of a prosecution.

"The floods in Bangkok last 1 or 2 hours and we are severely criticised.
The floods in the provinces last for days and no one says anything."
The Bangkok Gov. is 100% right. What about the flooding in 11 other provinces ?
The support base numbers are in clear favour of the Democrats.
And then you add the 1000s that were affected directly or indirectly in the 2009,2010 mayhem. My guess, they won't vote for Puea Thai Party.

Plastic garbage is a major bane in many counties but especially so here in Thailand. If I pop into a 711 for a bag of chips and a chocolate bar they want to put them in a plastic bag. When I say “no bag needed” they look at me as if I'm crazy. It’s probably too late to teach most adults about the proliferation of carelessly discarded plastic but teachers could make a start indoctrinating young children as parents obviously don't care. And shops should start charging for plastic bags.

Victor D23, it's not exclusively the result of plastic bags. Gays and lesbian people are indeed a part of culture and have been for thousands of years.
However, D14 points to the fact that there's a very high percentage of lady-boys (or transgender) people in Thailand, combined with the very high percentage of so called tom-boys compared to for example the USA/Europe.
That is the point of discussion. I tend to agree with D14 that it can not be a sole cultural thing. compared to US/Europe, the numbers are very different. Gay/Lesbian maybe not, but Transgender people are far less common in Europe than in Thailand/Asia.

D14: are you for real? Ladyboys have been around for thousands of years, just read your history books. To suggest that they are some form of mutant, caused through the country's obsession with putting everything in a plastic bag is bizarre and highly insulting to say the least. Gays, lesbians and transgenders add to this colorful and varied planet we live on. Apologies if they don't fit into your view of a perfect world.
Perhaps more education on the TV and a huge tax on the manufacturers of the bags and shops who use them may help. This tax can then be used to clean up the pollution (bags, that is, not ladyboys).

Now on the point of flood prevention you get what you vote for not what you pay for.Employ monkeys you get empty peanut shells .QED.

The plastic bag so called problem,The only problem with plastic bags is the idiot who discards it there is nothing wrong with the bag.
We recycle bogs by using them for house hold rubbish.
If you stop issuing PBs we will have to buy something to put the rubbish in and that will be a black plastic bin liner.England is on this hobby horse,I would like to bet that because business is reducing free bags the sale of black bin liners have gone up dramatically so how have you solved the problem,More over the supermarkets by no longer supplying bags but selling black bags are on a winner Yes.
Plastic begs can be made biodegradable.
Some parts of Bangkok and Thailand look like rubbish tips,Education about wast disposal is needed and pretty dam fast.It is nothing to do with PBs It is people who are the problem.
