Nitirat calls for return to democratic ideals of 1932

Academics told a Thammasat University seminar that Thailand should adopt the democratic philosophy of 1932 in drafting a new charter.

This would return the sovereign power to the people and add punitive measures against any person trying to tear down the constitution, they said.

The panellists, speaking on the topic "Lawyers and the Coup" during a seminar at Thammasat University yesterday, were referring to the 1932 coup which changed the country's administrative system from an absolute monarchy to democracy.
