Colonels reap rewards from 2010 crackdown

Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha has signed an order promoting 313 colonels who were commanders of key combat units during the 2010 political violence.

They include army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, who becomes the deputy commander of the army's civil affairs school.

Col Sansern was the key spokesman who spoke up for the army during the clashes between troops and the red shirts in April and May in 2010.

What happened to the rank of "special colonel"? Never heard of a deputy general before. Is it something like a deputy sheriff? The Thai military - and police - are rank happy. We used to joke about it. The Thai army has more generals than most armies have majors. Still, it is not a bad as it once was. There are fewer slot for brigadier general and a lot of academy graduates will never see the rank, which caused some grumbling when that was done 10 or so years ago.

D1, the majority of the things you list are due to politics.
Army had to wait for government ok to start doing anything and before they moved in, it was our water mellon police not handling the problems...

Disc.1. The army should never have to be used for crowd control during demonstrations; that's the job of the Police. But the question remains: Where were the Police during the 2010 troubles?

Why does the army have or need so many colonels? It appears to be more of a promotion for mishandling the protest. I recall the army being beaten back and losing a lot of equipment. How is it the peaceful protesters were allowed to build barricades? Why were protester reinforcements allowed in during the last few days as maybe a lot of bad boys were allowed in the mix. The army is ill-equipped for crowd control with combat units. But oh well, let them pat themselves on the back for a job well done.
