LPG ship catches fire off Phuket

A fire broke out on a vessel carrying LPG tanks moored in Taphao Yai Bay about 2 kilometres from the Phuket deep-sea port off Muang district on Sunday morning. It was later put out by firefighting launches. The damage was estimated at 20 million baht.

A marine launch under the command of Pol Lt-Col Panya Chaichana on patrol duty in Taphao Yai Bay at about 8.30am spotted the ship with a crewman on board waving for help. He was later identified as Panurat Rakchon, 34, of Samut Prakan province.

Mr Panurat was immediately rescued from the vessel. He said the fire broke out in the radio room on the second deck of the ship which carries two LPG tanks, each capable of holding 10 million litres of the gas, about 5,000 litres of bulk oil and 200 litres of diesel oil.

Discussion 2. This is a tiddler of a boat so not surprising and it didnt seem to be going anywhere. How about 320,000 ton crude carriers with 16 men on? You can work all day and not see anyone for most of it. Safety at sea is fine as long as it does not cost the owner/operator/manager any money. Small crew means small accommodation, small service plants (water/aircon/sewage)small food bills, small wage bills and smaller life boats/raft requirements, all saving money in construction and operation. Owners/manager/operators will not do anything unless it is legislated for. The days of Samuel Plimsoll have not passed. I speak with 40 years sea experience with a variety of companies, half of it in oil and gas.

I dont believe this, LPG tanker with only 4 men manning it? This is outrageous, safety at sea is important!! With only 4 men onboard, how is it possible to be carried out? The owner and charterer of the vessel must be investigate!!! Anyone in the marine, oil & gas will instantly know what i'm talking about.

To cope with the increase of divers in the Andaman Sea, we need shipwrecks as artificial reefs.
Thai Administration should help TDA Diving Association (Thailand) to get it from the insurance company and sunk it nearby Phuket and Phi-phi Islands for the joy of fun wreck dives.
