Govt to explain rice pledging 'in court'

The government is determined to continue with its rice price pledging scheme and will explain it in court if needs be, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Tuesday

Ms Yingluck was responding to a report that lecturers at the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) will tomorrow resubmit a petition to the Constitution Court seeking an order halting the rice scheme as unconstitutional.

The prime minister said the government is raising incomes of farmers and improving their living standards.

@Disc 16 - You said many rice millers are corrupted, that is true but there are just as many rice millers who support the PTP as well. In fact most middle and small millers that farmers sell their rice to are PTP supporters. The main problem is with the government policy that is putting the country in debt.

Corruption with the rice miller is the same regarding of which policy as they try to cheat farmers no matter what, but with such high price set by the PTP they do it even more.

mogy71 (D11) bluebottle (D12): I know nothing about rice farming, or the rice industry, that is why I am asking for hard facts to prove so many accusations against this scheme. I don't support the scheme, or oppose it, because I just don't have enough information to make up my mind.

Thus, it is certainly not clear to me that, in general, farmers are not receiving all they should, because no-one has so far given me any proof, and I don't know how many more cases of fraud are yet to be discovered. Can either of you enlighten me? Presumably you have the evidence to support your assertions.

So how will the government explain the massive fraud in the scheme and the total lack of transparency.. wealthy individuals and politicians illegally profit. Whose going to move these guys to inactive posts and give the rest suspended sentences...such is the law in the country.

Well, she says she has seen the purchase orders for government to government deals, then why all the secrecy, just release them to the press for verification it would relieve some of the negative statements, but we know this won't be done because she is telling a "little white lie".

bluebottle #12: Your point is noted. You're the best person to show the authorities the evidences that you have regarding the fraud cases which you repeatedly make accusations about.

For your information, many of the rice millers are Dem and BJT supporters. The very same ones who are caught red handed for the rice frauds. The very same ones who kept enriching themselves through the years whilst the farmers remain poor.

i think people know what and why the rice pledging scheme is. What people want to know is when it'll be handled with more transparency and how it will be financed without mortgaging our children's future.

We are witnessing the death of an industry. Destroyed by inept government policy. Just wait until Thai rice carries a lower street-price around the world because it is known for being low quality. That day is only a couple years away. So much for the desire to create a Thailand "brand" of quality.

D3: has a point. Lots of opinions and accusations flying about and to date not one scrap of evidence from either party.

  • Discussion 12 : 09 Oct 2012 at 21.2212

robingrant It is clear to any one who has been following this farce that it would not be difficult to find many more small farmers who have not been paid the correct price for there rice. Are you also suggesting that there are only 25 cases of fraud. It would appear beyond doubt that many more would be found were the government prepared to investigate. That assumes you could find people with the integrate to do the investigating.

  • Discussion 11 : 09 Oct 2012 at 20.3811

Robingrant: you know as well as everyone else that the farmers are not receiving all that they could should the millers and other middlemen decide not to be so greedy.
Denialism is a nasty trait among the PTP supporters.
