62kg of crystal meth seized (pix)

PATHUM THANI - Police on Wednesday arrested three men from Chiang Rai after finding 62 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, or ice, that had been hidden in an impounded car in the police evidence compound, Pathum Thani police chief Smith Mukdasanit said.

Pol Maj Gen Smith said the drugs have an estimated street value of 200 million baht.

He named the three men as Jasue Jalae, 33, Janu Ja-ue, 39, and Chatree Preechamitrakul, 25.

If the only reason it was impounded was because it was abandoned at a hit and run, why would it be necessary to inspect the vehicle beyond what is necessary to build the hit and run case? A cursory exterior inspection would probably be sufficient to build the hit and run case, and unlikely to find drugs hidden within the vehicle. I don't think the police did anything wrong here and did a fine job in catching the dealers, unless there is some law or policy that all impounded vehicles are torn apart to look for drugs, regardless of the original reason they were impounded. Should the police also then be expected to perform a full cavity search of anybody stopping an officer to ask for directions or report a crime?

That's bad news - especially about the police. The police impounds a hit-and-run vehicle and fails to inspect it for several days? That's outrageous! Needless to say to those responsible for this gross negligence will be promoted for catching these 62 kilos.

They should be grateful that stupidity is not a capital offense!
