Otep boss vows to reduce teachers' debts

The new secretary-general of the Office of the Welfare Promotion Commission for Teachers and Educational Personnel (Otep) has pledged to help teachers struggling with high levels of debt.

Somsak Tachai made the pledge yesterday at his first staff meeting since taking up the position at the beginning of this month.

Mr Somsak said that enhancing teachers' quality of life by reducing their debt levels was among five policies he had initiated.

Before he does this I think a screening of the teachers teaching skills should be looked at and evaluated.I live across the street from a "school",these kids have more days off than anywhere I've ever seen.My 12 year old niece can barely read.I think the school system in Thailand is in great need of a upgrade or the kid's future will be just like their parents, poor and uneducated.I love Thailand and their people but I feel so sad to see these kids not learning and gaining the required skills to compete in a future world.I offered to teach English classes at no cost to give back to my community but was sadly turned dowm, pity.
