There is a good chance the screen wasn't properly installed when maintained by the service guy. But then it is very hard for the screen to pop out. The screen and internal components are behind the front plate which is usually one piece that swings open. It is extremely difficult for something to be pull out from the front face plate.

    robins,

The women were accused of purposely breaking the ATM. It would constitute criminal damage, which does exist in Thai law, and is for the police to investigate. The police concluded the ATM was malfunctioning.

Surprising that the bank would even involve the police in a matter such as this, from a reading Thai law it would seem that the bank should have sought damages in civil court, not through a criminal complaint to the police. The distinction between a civil tort and a criminal act is much less clear here than in the West.

dekwat, discussion 1, nowhere does the story say that the police has charged or is considering charging the women. On the contrary, "police suspect that the machine was already malfunctioning and the women were not guilty of causing the damage claimed by the bank official". Most ATMs have a camera above the screen (not hidden behind behind it).
That's why I always check money withdrawn under the eye of the camera, so that if I receive an incorrect amount, it is recorded by CCTV.

Screens can't just "pop" out of ATM machines for no reason but I doubt a woman would have the strength for such feat. The machine could have been damaged by someone else.
All ATMs have a camera (CCTV) either pointed at the machine or hidden behind the screen.
The evidence would be easy to verify if only the police knew how to do their job instead of charging people without proofs.
