School tablets to get B120m internet filter

The government has decided to install an internet access control system in all tablet computers distributed to Prathom 1 students, or first graders.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Anudith Nakornthap said the system, technically called the authentication system, aimed to prevent young users from opening inappropriate websites.

Installing the system will cost about 120 million baht and the state telecom enterprise TOT Plc will be responsible for it. Once installed, students will be unable to open websites blacklisted by the ICT Ministry.

I didn't know it takes 120 million baht to write a simple program that blocks access to porn sites and install it on all tablets. There are free programs for download as of now that does the same thing. Seems like these corrupted officials trying to steal as much money as possible. Whats next? giving a way film protectors to reduce glare to protect childrens eyes?

No the students may not open the porn sites, but what about parents, older brothers/sisters and friends when they take the tablets home.

Agreed, porn can be inappropriate for children but the online game websites can be devastating to personal and intellectual development. Does BP know if game sites are/will be censored?

If you don't believe first graders would intentionally open porn sites and they wouldn't know what they are looking at anyway, it's not an issue worth 120 million baht. Somebody making easy money from the government. Looking at porn is not a disease, so I don't agree with the internet filter-vaccine comparison.
