Nurses rally to seek answers over delay to civil job status

Govt vows to act amid mass resignation threat

About 1,000 professional nurses rallied outside Government House yesterday demanding an explanation for delays in the government's promise to give them civil servant employment status that would offer them better work benefits.

About 1,000 professional nurses from state hospitals rally outside Government House yesterday demanding to know why a promise to give them civil servant employment status has not yet been delivered. APICHART JINAKUL

The nurses are currently employed as either temporary or permanent non-civil servant staff at state hospitals throughout the country, due to a lack of civil servant position quotas.

@justfacts D9, US consumers pay exorbitant price for their meds thereby subsidizing the rest of the world, especially the developing countries. The drug companies need to recoup the cost of R&D so as to remain profitable and be able to continue to develop new drugs. This has not stopped many pharmaceuticals in some countries to illegally produce and market 'generics' ignoring international patent laws.

Khun Justfact #9, two of my close (Thai) relatives are medical doctors here in the US, and they all hate the bloodsucking lawyers. They said a doctor has to pay about $100,000 in medical insurance premium upfront before they can start practicing medicine, in order to keep those bloodsuckers away. And if a doctor is sued 3 times, his or her medical career is over, as no insurance company would want to insure him or her ever again. As a result doctors tend to practice "defensive medicine" by overprescribing drugs or tests just to cover their back, which unnecessarily increases healthcare cost. So, when those bloodsuckers need to see doctors, they have to go to the other corner of the country, and lie through their teeth to hide their profession, as no doctors in their town would want to treat them.

There is so little gain for the politicos, who rarely, if ever use State Hospitals that the nurses will need to fight - and the rest of us will need to help them. Bluster and obfuscation from the Government is unacceptable. Come on PM - you have worked hard on Big Brother's rice scheme - what about the nurses who actually look after people?

#1-3-6-7 not sure how the us health care got brought into the picture ,but one eason for outlandish fees is the US government lets phamra companies recoup their R&D cost thru the price of meds,no ther country in the world to my knowledge allows this.Althou I agree blood sucking lawyers are lower than thai politicians they are not the only reason for the health care problems in the US and Obrainless is not helping the situation at all with his socialistic BS

Khun BJ#6, although, I agree with you completely that Thai nurses should learn to speak, read, and write English fluently, so they can seek better career opportunity abroad, the US Healthcare System, through the American pharmaceutical industry, has so far benefited the medical world greatly. How many new life-saving drugs, medical procedures and equipments like the CT Scan, and etc., came out of the US Healthcare System? All the US needs is a Tort Law reform to weed out these outrageous frivolous lawsuits, and to limit the payout damages to a reasonable amount (while starving out the bloodsucking lawyers in the process) which will dramatically bring down the cost of healthcare in the US, while maintaining the same quality excellence.

Please don't mention US healthcare as an example for anything...there is a reason that a most world wide health insurances simply don't want to cover the US and if so only against a very high fee. Thai nurses should of course not be working on short term contract with no benefits, hope they will sort it put somehow. As the AEC is moving closer we have already seen Thai nurses being offered jobs in Singapore for much higher salaries and benefits than here and there will also be a large demand for nurses in Japan due to the aging population there, so for nurses that are not afraid of traveling the future is bright.

Bottom liine, Phue Thaksin realized nurses are educated, no chance of then believeing all their (P/T ) BS and voting for them in the future...no need to follow thru on a promise that nets no votes

  • Discussion 4 : 17 Oct 2012 at 06.074

There is no money to be made here by politicians or administrators. I do not see much being done to help the nurses.

Khun Boons #2, if Thai patients are allowed to sue their doctors for whatever reasons imaginable for multi million dollars legal settlements, Thailand's healthcare system will be just as expensive as that of the US. That's the reason why bloodsucking lawyers are now making more money than doctors. If you can make millions of dollars from legal settlement for spilling your hot McDonald's coffee on your lap while driving, the sky is the limit!
