Help likely for schools hit by supplies scam

SURAT THANI : The Finance Ministry is likely to compensate vocational schools targetted by a scam that left them with unwanted and substandard learning equipment.

The ministry has agreed in principle to compensate colleges which received the unwanted learning tools, many of which now gather dust in storerooms as they cannot be used, Deputy Education Minister Sakda Khongpetch said.

The colleges fell victim to alleged corruption in a scheme by the Office of Vocational Education (Ovec) to procure learning equipment under the second phase of the Thai Khem Kaeng economic stimulus programme. The matter was forwarded to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

Equipment were passed out for free? Why is there a need to compensate the schools? If school officials didn't approve the procurement, why would the unused equipment be sent there?
