Anti-nuclear group warns against rush to reactor

An anti-nuclear group has voiced its opposition to newly appointed Science and Technology Minister Woravat Au-apinyakul's plans to push through the controversial nuclear research reactor project in Nakhon Nayok.

The minister needs to carefully consider whether Thailand needs another nuclear reactor while there are safer and cheaper alternatives, said Santi Chokchaichamnankit, leader of Energy Watch, a Bangkok-based non-profit group working on alternative energy and anti-nuclear issues.

Mr Woravat said on his first day in office on Friday that he would revive the Ongkharak Nuclear Research Centre Project as part of an overall policy to promote the use of nuclear technology.

Science and Technology Minister Woravat Au-apinyakul obviously do not live in Nakhon Nayok. A better place to build a nuclear research reactor would be in Chiang Mai or in Woravat's back yard.
