Thaksin rethinks visit to Tachilek

Chalerm confirms plot to assassinate ex-PM

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra may cancel his planned trip to Tachilek, Myanmar on Friday and Saturday due to security concerns.

His close associates said Thaksin's trip to Myanmar is still on, despite rumours of a possible assassination plot. Thaksin is scheduled to meet Myanmar President Thein Sein on Thursday in Nay Pyi Taw.

Noppadon Pattama, Thaksin's legal adviser, said security assessments are being made prior to the former premier's arrival in Myanmar.

Although the suspect later retracted his testimony, Thai police are working closely with their Myanmar counterparts on security issues

Why am I not surprised at this statement.

So, the "great victim" has decided to call off his trip to Burma? If Mr. T. is the great Mandela-like figure he claims to be, why doesn't he just return to Thailand and serve out his jail time like a martyr? If one can't be safe in the jails of a country politically "lead" by one's own sister, where can one be safe?

    Quotes
Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who is in charge of national security, confirmed yesterday there is a plot to assassinate Thaksin.
Mr Chalerm said a Shan suspect arrested in Tachilek last Friday for allegedly smuggling heavy weapons across the Thai-Myanmar border _ including three rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) _ had confessed that there was a plot to kill Thaksin during a merit-making event in Tachilek on Saturday.
"The suspect has revealed the name of the mastermind behind the assassination attempt," Mr Chalerm said.
The mastermind is not planning to topple the government, but planning to harm Thaksin, he added.

Trumped up bomb plots against Thaksin are just one of his many ways of staying in the news. They are the equivalent of his sister the Yingluck giving the Yinglook photo op as she knowingly points in at something implying action is in the works and she is in charge. They are both Shinawatra shams.

Threat probably true. He made a lot of drug lord enemies during his war on drugs.

Sounds like a plot of a good/bad movie. No facts just a script.

Since he says that people are out to kill him all the time, in the interests of the Thais, he should not return to Thailand because a bomb might go off any day anywhere he moves in Thailand. This would be bad for Thai tourism and the country's reputation for being safe, and also many innocent people might be killed because of him. A lot of Thais have already died because of his desire to return. I'm sure that he wouldn't want any more people to die because of him.

Seems odd to me that grenades would have to be smuggled into Burma from Thailand. Burma has no shortage of weapons. Of course there is also no shortage of people who would be pleased to see Thaksin go to the temple for a wash up but I find it doubtful that the Thai government has indeed uncovered an actual conspiracy in the works. I think this is all government inspired drama.
