Minister rejects fare hikes

Transport Minister Chadchat Sittipunt has put the brakes on the State Railway of Thailand's (SRT) request for a 10% increase in train fares.

The minister said the fares on public transport services will remain unchanged for the time being, in line with the government's policy to freeze diesel prices at a maximum of 30 baht a litre.

The SRT had asked the ministry to implement the fare rise in March 2013.

Being serious,If the powers that be invest in a state of the art rail system they will either have to increase fairs or subsidise the system. If they increase fares those on 300 tbht a day and most use the present system will no longer be able to afford the fair or if they subsidise the whole thing the tax payer who will tend to use his own transport or fly will pay.Plus there is the cost of maintenance of the whole system they will not get away with the inadequate repairs they do now. They may try but that will put people in danger. Can you imagine the road crossings and the motorcycle crossings, carnage.

'Passengers will be asked to show proof of their income to ensure they are eligible to ride for free, Mr Chadchat added.' You have to prove your income (how?) to ride a bus? Amazing.
