Senate accepts two anti-terrorism bills in first reading

The Senate on Tuesday passed in the first reading two crucial bills aimed at combating money laundering and terrorism in the expectation Thailand to be removed from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) watch list.

The Anti-money Laundering Bill and the Bill on the Prevention and Suppression of Financial Support for Terrorism were each passed by a vote of 118-0 with two abstentions.

A committee will be set up in seven days to scrutinise the two bills.

"Early last month, Justice Minister Pracha Promnok said Thai embassy officials in Washington were struggling to cash bank cheques and conduct financial transactions as a result of Thailand being named on the FATF watch list."

Foreigners here in Thailand struggle to cash checks from their home countries also. It's very difficult to do banking here in Thailand. Something needs to be fixed.

When someone opposes the passing of this law, you can't help but wonder why.

"Law experts say a money-laundering law is regarded as a form of high-level political reform if users have good governance, but in Thailand's case this is questionable," Mr Khamnoon said. I hope and trust he didn't say that, and that what he actually said was lost in translation. Regardless, may I suggest that Khamnoon be investigated?
