Business drops in Krabi over 'rape' clip

Hotels at Thailand's Krabi beach resort have been hit by a rash of room cancellations after the release of a video airing a Dutch father's outrage over his daughter's assault there, tourism industry sources said Friday.

The "Evil Man from Krabi" video, which first aired on YouTube on Oct 23, showed a man with a rifle singing about the rape of his 19-year-old daughter in Jul, accusing a Thai tour guide of the crime and demanding justice.

The video had received more than 140,000 hits on the website by Friday and has started to hurt the tourism industry in Krabi, 650 kilometres south of Bangkok.

Tourists keep coming because of a sense of disbelief. I am often asked by friends back home, is Thailand really that dangerous or is it media hype? People have to burn their fingers before they accept it is hot.It is difficult for a citizen of the western world to appreciate the level of open corruption here unless they actually experience it first hand.

    spiceman D@5 "Right!"

Unlike the past, there are now many beaches for foreign tourists to go in S. E. Asia. Thailand gets lots of revenue from tourism & 'image is everything.' Abuse like rape is most serious, but other rip-off schemes are terrible as well. Foreigners rarely get justice is such cases. Interestingly, the South has a worse reputation for this than my 'hometown' of Chiang Mai.

Unfortunately for the police there is very little money in rape, unless they are getting a cut of the bail.
Most countries with a decent professional police force would take this matter very seriously. Enough said

Sadly, but very predictably, the other online news source is saying authorities are wanting to block the video, while Tourism Minister Chumphol Silapa-archa states that the incident was not a rape, and in some ways blamed the victim. There you have it. Total denial a rape happened, censoring information, blaming the victim, and an unwillingness to admit anything is wrong. I hope potential tourists read the news available and look elsewhere for their vacations. Thailand does not deserve anyone's hard earned money when they continually coverup, continue the blame game, and could care less about tourist safety.

People are not cancelling because of the video. They are cancelling because of lack of safety in Thailand and a faulty justice system. Covering up crimes and hoping they go away doesn't work with foreigners but the Thai Government doesn't quite seem to grasp that concept.

Instead of trying to get the video blocked from the view of those of us living in Thailand and instead of the Minister of Tourism and Sport's claim that it wasn't rape, why don't Thai Government officials call for the immediate incarceration and speedy trial of the accused?

Thailand has to compete with other countries as one of many tourist destinations in the region. So, unless justice is finally served, it sure will discourage many prospective tourists from visiting our country. Sure, it will eventually blow over, but not before causing significant damage to our country's image and economy. Tourists come to our country to enjoy their vacations, not to be raped.

This is also the result of continuous corruption and a wake-up call for the police. People don't trust the police to tell the truth and to protect the people. We all know that the police are happy to turn a blind eye and to cover up the truth in exchange for personal benefits and to protect influential people. It's a great shame and indicates a huge crack in the foundation of Thai society.

The world is connected now through the internet .This nonsense wont fly anymore .

Unfortunately, this will all blow over within weeks and it will be business as usual. There has been massive publicity all over the internet and all over the world about the scams and violence that occur against foreigners, and still they pour into the country in ever increasing numbers. So many in fact that they are choking the airports in their numbers.

This is what's needed. Maybe the same will start happening in other Thai towns where similar coverups have occurred? We can only hope.
