Dams unaffected by tremor

The powerful earthquake which rattled central Myanmar yesterday morning had no adverse impacts on two major dams in Kanchanaburi province, the dam directors said.

Boon-in Chuenchavalit, director of Srinakarin dam, and Vanich Saengsuwan, director of Vajiralongkorn dam run by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, said the dams are able to withstand strong quakes and this one had no effect on the structures.

The dams are checked and maintained regularly to ensure they are structurally sound, they said.

"The last structural check on Vajiralongkorn dam was conducted on July 21, 2010 and Srinakarin dam on Jan 26, 2011", so how do they know so soon that no damage has been done?
