Housemaids get days off, paid leave

More than four million maids employed in houses nationwide will be entitled to at least one day off a week under new regulations to improve their working conditions, effective from Friday.

Labour Minister Padermchai Sasomsap signed the amendment to the ministerial regulation on Oct 30.

Under the new regulation, domestic workers are entitled to at least one day off each week, plus 13 traditional paid holidays a year, six days paid annual leave after one year of employment, and three days of paid sick leave a year.

@ banmebkk how are they promoting underage workers??? Minimum (legal) working age is 15. As the minimum (legal) school leaving age is 15 are you suggesting they have to sit around for 3 years until they can start work?

At least they start to do something about it to improve their quality of life and not letting the riches taking advantage

Looking at all the latest model smart phones, iPads, gameboys, etc., that all my students have, it seems a 20,000 baht fine is little more than a gentle caress on the wrist for those people who have maids. And that's if any case ever came to court, which is highly unlikely.

I congratulate the Labour Minister for the new legislation. This put Thailand ahead of Singapore, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia etc in having a legislative ruling on day off.

I thought that was the standard labor law in Thailand why is it needed to sign an amendment for maids?

Or do double and triple standards really exist in Thailand?
