Poll: People worried about jobless

Nearly half of the people polled were concerned that workers would be laid off because of the impact of the 300 baht daily minimum wage nationwide policy, Nida Poll reported on Friday.

Nida Poll of the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) conducted a survey on “Impact of Wage Hike Policy” from Nov 14-15, seeking opinions from 1,247 people nationwide.

The pollster said 48.04% of the respondents were worried that because of the wage hike, manufacturers would lay off Thai workers and turn to hiring foreign workers whose wages are lower.

When will all the economic amateurs stop making policy decisions. Raising the minimum wage just raises the cost of living by an equal amount. It's classic "feel good" policy, but it's inherently inflationary and does not increase the standard of living over the long term. And for those making comparisons to the USA, please consider that the standard of living for US labor has been dropping steadily since the 1950's, even as the minimum wage has climbed.

Thailand's biggest problem is that it is becoming dangerously uncompetitive with neighboring nations. Thailand is an 80% export economy built on low-cost manufacturing. This won't wo

The B 300 per day have already been implemented in the big cities and had a minimum result on unemployment. Not to say that the increase will improve the living standard of the poor as it only equals about 1,5 hours pay of the US minimum wage. Prices of basic products could also increase which could undermine the objective of the minimum wage.

Costs of production have already gone up, along with other basic necessities such as food, transport and housing, which in turn, will impact adversely on real income of low paid/fixed income earners. Manufacturing industries with intensive labor costs will be forced to upgrade/stream line the work processes through automation/computerization in order to be more productive / efficient. Politicians that continue to play electioneering instead of working for the common good of the people will put Thailand at a considerable disadvantage come 2020; of course it may happened sooner rather than later.

And, sadly, here’s an obvious result of unemployment for whatever reason; crime will continue to rise and especially against those seen as naive and considered rich, the tourists.

I am think that 300 baht is good for minimum wage. I use 300 baht just for dinner everyday and 1000 baht per day include travel. So, i think the business that just pay under 300 baht now, and don't want to pay more are business that care only profit and not people, and if they cannot afford just this then maybe not run business is better.

As the saying goes "If you cannot stand the heat get out of the kitchen" Is it not time employers who only exist because the pay low wages and feed of the less educated disappeared. 1800 bht for a 6 day week,25 a hr if they do a 12 hr day that's is equivalent to 1/2 a euro per hour.

People are in fact worried about "unemployment".
They are right. Most large factories employing thousands of workers cannot afford to double everyone's salaries overnight.
"...they had time to prepare..." How could they?
I do agree that workers' salaries are too low and they should be given a substantial raise; but not at the cost of their job security.
Many factories will soon have to relocate and Thai workers will end up unemployed. The lucky ones will eventually find a new job, while the rest will have to turn to crime to survive. Did the government prepare for that?
